Sprite - Yeh Hai Hindustan Meri Jaan

April 7, 2008 – 10:52 am by Sulakshan | 3 Comments »

Sprite recently launched this commercial which is a spoof of Pepsi’s ‘Yeh Hai Youngistan Meri Jaan‘ Commercial, starring Shahrukh, Ranbir and Deepika. This ad does well as a spoof, but the problem is it does it too well. People will remember it more as a spoof of Pepsi ad and less as a Sprite ad. In my view, it promotes Pepsi, more than it promotes Sprite. Proof of this is that many of my friends have asked me to post ‘wo Pepsi ke ad ka spoof’.

The earlier Sprite ad was much better. It was refreshing, it was different and it perfectly suited its punch line - ‘Seedhi Baat, No Bakwas’. Infact that ad was much better and effective than the Pepsi’s ad.

In my opinion such spoof ads should be used in viral marketing and should be limited to internet or movie theaters. Or if you really need to fight the war (cola war), you should come up with such spoofs early. I mean this ad would have been really effective had it been launched within a week of Pepsi’s ad launch. Launching this ad two months after Pepsi’s ad, helps Pepsi more than it helps Sprite, Seedhi Baat, No Bakwas.

Sprite : Seedhi Baat

The is probably the cutest ads of recent times in more than one ways. It starts with the guy saying to his girlfriend that he has to leave. When the girl puts on a pout and says “Whats the hurry”, he replies (with a straight face) he has to meet another girl. His girl friend bids good bye thinking it is just a joke to get away.

He indeed meets another girl(who also happens to be another girlfriend of his). All through, he sits enjoying his Sprite with a smile. When asked why he was late, he says that he was with another girlfriend, and gets away with it with this girl too.

The ad enters without much funfare. It is the attitude of the guy that is to be highlighted. He just is open in what he is going to do or has done, always with a smile in his face. It represents the spirit of sprite which is about quenching thirst and nothing else. It is about just being yourself and being true about your actions which is the theme that sprite wants to project about itself.

Headlines Today : Blah Blah

March 17, 2008 – 2:21 am by Shiva | 6 Comments »

This ad in essence conveys that all the shows by CNN IBN, NDTV and Times Now are nothing but just blah blah and that Headlines Today is the only sensible news channel. Although not obviously using their branding/logo , the ad conveys such an idea subtly by using look alikes and imitations of members of the news crew from those channels One thing I must say is that the impersonation artists used for Pranab Roy and other analysts did a good job.

Impersonations work well for fun and humor. But not in advertisements where you are trying to do product differentiation…Here, it is imperative that you do not ridicule the competitors to the core. Also, it is a must that you gauge your market value and people perception before you devise an advertisement like this.

It must take guts to put an ad like this. That too by Headlines Today, a TV News Channel that I think doesn’t even compare with CNN IBN or NDTV. In short, Headlines Today is probably the worst News Channel among the whole lot of English TV News Channel in India now - a channel that thinks today’s educated crowd is dumb enough to be carried away by all the sensationalisation and sleaze of their programmes.

Coca Cola : Jashn Mana Le

March 15, 2008 – 12:43 pm by Shiva | No Comments »

Agency : McCann-Erickson, India
Director : Sabal Singh Shekhawat

When compared to the Youngistan Pepsi ad or even the new Thums Up ad from Akshay Kumar, this new ad from Hrithik Roshan is a true winner.

A group of friends go to a food joint- only to find it closed. One guy among the group spots Hrithik on the other side. In all earnestness, he tells the Hrithik that the place is closed. What starts next is something worth watching! Its like magic and out of nowhere the place lights up and all the food stalls are brimming with activity. The group enjoys a variety of chaat items to their hearts content all the while having coca cola. Finally as soon as the last of the coke from the bottles gets over, the place swings back to being closed or empty.

I think this campaign has been executed to perfection in all angles right from the story line to the minutest detail on the screen. It lays a big punch out of all the latest soft drinks ad and a very well planned one. It conveys a lot of freshness and essence in how they associate coca cola to having the best time when together with friends.

Bajaj Auto : Pulsar Mania

March 13, 2008 – 2:02 pm by Sulakshan | 6 Comments »

Agency: Ogilvy & Mather, Mumbai
Creative Team: Abhijit Avasthi, Manoj Shetty, Rajneesh Ramakrishnan
Production House: Velocity Films, South Africa
Director: Lourens Van Rensburg
Music: Paul Norwood, Audio Militia

“Four wheels move the body. Two wheels move the soul.”

This quote sums it all. This is the finest Bajaj campaign to hit the screen in recent years. It was shot in in Cape Town and the stunt team comprises the best riders across the world including AC Farias (World No.2), Matte Griffin etc.

Best ads are ones which make you feel attached to the product. Everything in this ad will touch your senses (if you are a biker). The stunts are just stunning, most beautifully choreographed and the music is breathtaking. The music just grows on you. You will want to watch it, talk about it, discuss it again and again and again.. just like the new girl in the class.

If Hamara Bajaj represented the India of our parents, this ad represents the India of today - bold, raring, aggressive, elegant, graceful and raring to go.

I am sure this ad will give some tense moments to all the girls in our lives - moms, wives and girlfriends. So talk to them, make them comfortable, promise them and then ….go.. vroooommm..

Kudos to all the guys who were involved in creation of this campaign.

Caution: If you ride like there’s no tomorrow, there won’t be. So please be reasonable while riding. Take care, be safe and wear you Helmet.

Virgin Mobile : Think Hatke

March 12, 2008 – 12:03 pm by Bibhuti | 2 Comments »

Agency : Bates David, India
Executive creative director : Rajeev Raja
Creative director : Rohit Malkani,Darshan Choudari

Whatever Sir Richard Branson does, he does it in style. Can you think of any business tycoon being lowered by wires down the face of a 35-storey hotel in Mumbai, unveiling the company’s logo in mid-air ? Thats’ precisely what Branson did when he launched Virgin Mobile in a tie-up with Tata group in India. The same hatke theme is reflected in their print and TV campaign.

The front page of The Times of India carried the print ad of Virgin Mobile claiming “Get Paid for Incoming“. And the headlines of all the news stories on the front page were red.

The TV commercial starts with a girl talking to her parents that she is not interested in guys. The poor parents get paranoid and started to blame each other that why she was sent to a girl’s school or why she was not allowed to mingle with colony boys. She then gets a call from a guy whom she replies that she is not interested in Goa trip. The worried parents persuades her to go on the trip and the voice over says, “Jab life dilaye jhatke then think hatke“.

Though I don’t see any link between the plot and the brand, it’s funny. Anything which makes people smile is a winner.

IPL : Cricket Ka Karmayudh

March 11, 2008 – 10:37 am by Bibhuti | 14 Comments »

Agency : O&M, India

Now that the IPL bidding war is over and the cloud of money is exhausted on players, it’s time for promoting the event. The promos of DLF India Premier League have started to come on TV and the slogan is “Cricket Ka Karmayudh“. The USP of this campaign is the rustic and free flowing music. Does anyone know the singer and music director ?

Lyrics:

Aankhen uunchi kar dekh sikhar
Hathiyar utha tu dikha hunar

Mutthi mein hai teri hai taqat
Dushman ki ayee hai aafat

Tu laga dao, tu laga pench
Tu dekha jigar,tu dikha tez

Lakhon dhadkan ki jaan hai tu
Lakhon ke dil ki shan hai tu

Tu laga zor, tu macha sor
Ek mahaveer santan hai tu

Na deshyudh, na dharmayudh
Yeh hai dharti par karmayudh
